I remember the first time I saw the Apple TV. My first thought was Apple has done it again. This was a deal changer. Then I got to play with the device in the real world. I came to another conclusion. Apple TV wasn’t ready for primetime. The first issue was HD content. Realizing download speeds in the United States lag far behind many countries; all I saw overnight or all day downloads. Plus clogging of my own home network for hours. Even with a peer to peer network I just saw hours of download.
Next issue was the lack of a DVR option. I find the inability to record a television program to be major issue. The lack a DVR option is a very strange choice when you considerer Apple make computers. Any computer can be made into a media center with a few item purchased from http://www.elgato.com . Which leads me to a Mac Mini TV. The Mac Mini is the perfect TV platform for an Apple media center.
You have size, speed, and storage. The first day the device hit the market the web was a buzz about mods for the device. I sure Apple wasn’t happy about all the mods but it showed the many possibility of the system.
By building in HDMI, software for recording / media management (itunes and other sources) and build in airport extreme base station. A Mac Mini TV would be a true deal changer. It would be a simple, plug in play solution for a media center. Hopefully the next generation of Apple TV will be a Mac Mini
